Aspect ratio is one of the smallest controls in an AI image generator and one of the largest composition decisions. It defines the relationship between width and height before a subject, horizon, or line of copy enters the frame. It changes where the model places visual weight, how much environment can appear, and whether the final asset survives its destination.
Treating ratio as a download setting leaves composition to chance. A square image cropped into a banner often loses the context that made it useful. A widescreen scene cropped into a phone story may remove the subject entirely. Generating inside the intended frame gives the model a chance to solve the real layout.
The FLUX 3 workspace exposes five ratios: 1:1, 3:4, 4:3, 16:9, and 9:16. They cover common product, editorial, web, presentation, and mobile needs without turning the generator into a dimensions calculator.
Ratio is not resolution
Aspect ratio describes shape, not pixel count. A 1:1 image might be 1024 by 1024 pixels or much larger; both are square. A 16:9 image might be 1920 by 1080 or 1280 by 720; both share the same proportional frame.
Resolution affects detail, output size, print suitability, and delivery performance. Ratio affects composition. The two decisions interact, but they should not be confused. Choosing 9:16 does not guarantee a particular phone-screen resolution, and choosing 4:3 does not tell you whether an image can support a large print.
For an AI workflow, start with ratio because it organizes the requested scene. After generation, inspect the delivered dimensions and decide whether resizing, expansion, or a higher-resolution production path is required.
Use 1:1 for concentrated visual systems
The square frame gives equal weight to horizontal and vertical axes. It works well for centered products, profile images, album or report covers, tile-based interfaces, and social posts that must remain recognizable in a compact feed.
Square does not require a centered subject. An off-center object with balanced negative space can feel deliberate, especially when the tile needs a label or badge. However, the equal frame naturally supports symmetry and stable silhouettes.
When prompting a square product image, identify whether the object should fill the tile or sit within generous margins. “Centered black glass watch occupying the middle half of the square, honed basalt surface, controlled rim light” gives a different result from merely adding “1:1.”
Square is less effective when the story depends on lateral distance, a broad environment, or a full standing figure with context. The model may compress those relationships or make the subject too small. In those cases, choose a wider or taller frame rather than asking the square to hold everything.
Use 3:4 for portraits, packaging, and editorial art
The 3:4 vertical frame provides meaningful height without the extreme narrowness of a phone screen. It is a strong default for portraits, fashion, product packaging, posters, editorial illustrations, and cards that need a vertical focal point.
For a person, 3:4 can hold a waist-up or full-body composition with enough surrounding context to describe role and setting. It also leaves room above the head for editorial typography when the prompt reserves that space.
For packaging, the frame matches the vertical structure of bottles, boxes, and grouped product systems. Describe the relationship between object height and margins. A product that touches every edge can feel accidental and leaves no room for cropping or copy.
The ratio is also useful for a web card that becomes narrower on mobile. Its moderate verticality stays legible without creating the long scroll footprint of 9:16. If the intended destination is a magazine page or campaign poster, generate with the likely text zones in mind even if typography will be added later.
Use 4:3 for environments with retained height
The 4:3 landscape frame is wider than it is tall but preserves more vertical information than widescreen. It suits interiors, architecture, editorial reportage, product scenes with supporting context, diagrams, and article images.
Compared with 16:9, 4:3 gives ceilings, foreground surfaces, and vertical objects more room. An interior can show floor, furniture, and light source without becoming a thin panoramic strip. An architectural exterior can include the building and enough sky or foreground to establish scale.
This ratio is often resilient across responsive content. It can crop modestly into a square card or a wider article header while retaining more of the scene than an extreme original. That does not eliminate the need to test crops, but it gives designers useful material.
Prompt with viewpoint and depth. “Eye-level 4:3 architectural photograph from the courtyard entrance, library volumes on three sides, pale brick, overcast daylight” tells the model how the rectangle relates to the space.
Use 16:9 for lateral narratives
The 16:9 frame is the familiar shape of video, presentation screens, hero banners, and storyboards. It supports a wide environment, movement across the frame, relationships between separated subjects, and deliberate negative space beside a focal point.
Widescreen can look cinematic, but the ratio alone does not create a cinematic image. Camera height, lens, lighting, blocking, and tonal structure do that work. A vague scene in 16:9 is simply a vague scene with extra width.
For a website hero, identify where the interface will place text. “Subject in the right third, uninterrupted dark wall across the left half for a headline” is a layout instruction. Keep in mind that responsive design may crop the left and right edges on smaller screens. Place essential content inside a safer central region unless the site uses separate mobile art.
For storyboards, use consistent horizon height, lens language, character direction, and environment across frames. The ratio creates continuity with video delivery, but saved prompts and reference frames create continuity between images.
Widescreen is a poor choice for a tall product or full-body portrait when the surrounding environment has no narrative job. The extra space may be filled with arbitrary props. Choose the ratio that supports the subject rather than the ratio associated with prestige.
Use 9:16 for full-screen mobile composition
The 9:16 frame is designed for phone stories, reels, vertical ads, and other full-screen mobile placements. It supports standing figures, stacked spatial layers, tall architecture, falling or rising movement, and compositions that guide the eye vertically.
Mobile interfaces rarely show the image unobstructed. Account names, captions, buttons, progress indicators, and system controls occupy the top and bottom. A production prompt should reserve safe zones. Keep faces, product labels, and critical actions away from the extreme edges.
Vertical depth can be organized in layers: foreground texture, main subject, background architecture, and sky. Without a plan, the model may stretch one object or leave a large meaningless zone. Describe how the subject occupies the frame and what should happen above and below it.
A 9:16 result is difficult to repurpose as a desktop banner. If a campaign needs both, generate dedicated versions from the same art direction. Trying to crop one into the other usually sacrifices either subject scale or environmental meaning.
Compose for interface overlays
The image destination is often an interface, not a blank rectangle. A landing page may add a navigation bar, headline, call-to-action, and contrast overlay. An e-commerce card may add price and badges below the image. A social post may place controls directly on top.
List the zones that must remain quiet. “Clean upper-left area,” “uninterrupted dark surface on the right,” or “subject below the top quarter” gives the model a spatial goal. The request should still describe a coherent photograph or illustration; empty space must feel like part of the composition rather than an unfinished patch.
Text generated inside an image is usually less reliable than typography applied in layout software. If exact copy matters, reserve a surface and add the text afterward. The image prompt can describe a blank label area, sign, or poster shape without asking the model to spell final campaign language.
Review mockups with real overlays early. A beautiful raw frame can fail once white type crosses a bright highlight or a mobile button covers the product.
Plan families of ratios instead of random crops
A campaign often needs several orientations. Build a ratio family around stable art direction: the same subject, material palette, light, camera character, and environmental logic. Then adjust composition for each frame.
The square version might isolate the product. The 3:4 version might include a hand or packaging system. The 16:9 version might place the product on one side with campaign space. The 9:16 version might stack product, shadow, and environmental cue vertically. They should feel related without being identical crops.
Reference-led editing can help preserve key visual facts, but it still needs ratio-specific direction. State what should remain consistent and how the composition should expand or reorganize. Check that an edit does not stretch a product, duplicate an element, or invent label details.
Store the selected ratio with each output and include the destination in the filename or asset record. This prevents a wide draft from being mistaken for the approved mobile version later.
Test crop resilience deliberately
Even a dedicated ratio may face small responsive crops. A 4:3 article card can become square. A 16:9 hero can become narrower when a sidebar opens. Test common viewport shapes rather than assuming object-fit: cover will make every composition safe.
Identify critical content: faces, hands, product labels, logos added in layout, and relationships that explain the scene. Keep critical content within a conservative safe area. Secondary atmosphere can occupy the edges and tolerate removal.
If the subject must stay at an edge for the design, provide a separate mobile asset or change the layout behavior. Art direction and responsive code should cooperate; neither can solve every frame alone.
Let the destination choose the ratio
There is no universally best aspect ratio. There is a ratio that gives a particular subject and destination the right space. Square concentrates. 3:4 supports moderate verticality. 4:3 balances environment and height. 16:9 carries lateral relationships. 9:16 fills a mobile screen.
Choose before generating, mention compositional consequences in the prompt, and review with the real interface overlay. If several destinations matter, create a related family rather than treating one image as an infinitely crop-safe master.
That decision costs almost no time at the beginning and prevents a great deal of repair at the end.
